MARJORIE SCHIFF
RE-ELECT
KATONAH-LEWISBORO SCHOOL DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD

ABOUT ME
My husband and I chose to move to Katonah-Lewisboro nearly 20 years ago for the wonderful schools, community, and natural surroundings. I was first elected to the school board when our son, who graduated from JJHS last year, was in first grade at MPES, and our daughter (now a JJHS student) was in pre-school. It has been an honor to represent our community on the school board for the past twelve years, and I am proud of all that we have accomplished together in that time.
My career in college administration at Duke University and the University of Virginia informs the knowledge and skills I bring to school board service. I served both as an admission dean, evaluating college applications from
students at public and private schools across New York State, and as a strategic planner. Through this work, I developed nuanced knowledge of the high-performing schools in our region; appreciation for the multifaceted
decisions students and families make to prepare for high school and life after K-12 education; and experience balancing priorities of students, staff, parents, and administration.

MY EXPERIENCE
My roles on the KLSD school board have included Board President, Vice President, and Chair of several subcommittees including Policy,
Sustainability, and currently the Facilities Committee to oversee implementation of capital improvements made possible by the recent $49.5 million bond supported by our community.
While as a single school board member I can’t take credit for a particular program implementation or hire, I’m proud to have played a role in fostering a school culture that is attracting great people to work in KLSD and many new families who select KLSD for the wonderful school community. I played an instrumental role in hiring a superintendent who unified our school district and moved KLSD forward and am actively involved in the search for our next superintendent who will build upon our strong foundation in a fiscally responsible manner.
Throughout my school board service, when a particular issue is brought to my attention at a public meeting or captures the attention of a constituency, I take this as an opportunity to become better educated and continuously improve my advocacy on behalf of all students: reading books and attending trainings with leading experts to learn more; talking with community members to better understand their experiences; engaging in professional learning to strengthen governance practices and help KLSD to navigate critical junctures.
I also represent KLSD on the Westchester Putnam School Board Association, where I serve on the Board of Directors and recently was
nominated by school board colleagues from across our region to serve as President next year. I facilitate and participate in governance training and professional learning for school board members and cultivate strategic relationships that benefit KLSD schools and students, for example with school board members and superintendents from across the region as well as with state legislators, whose support for public education is critical to our mission.
WHY I’M SEEKING RE-ELECTION
From conversations with many of you, I know and agree that as much as we have accomplished, there’s a great deal more we wish to do to enhance the quality of education provided to our students and ensure their well-being. I am currently involved in our search for a new superintendent, and my institutional knowledge and experience will help to ensure that we attract, hire, and successfully integrate a new superintendent who can build upon our foundation to take KLSD to the next level. I am also integrally involved in providing oversight of a bond project that will enhance the learning environment at every school building. This is a very exciting time for our school community, and I am eager to continue striving towards improvement of our schools and opportunities for students.
I thank you for the privilege of having served our school community to this point and would be honored to continue to represent you as one voice on the Katonah-Lewisboro school board.
